The goal of the Old Testament Challenge is to help you better understand the Bible and become a more fully devoted follower of Jesus. Be very active as you read the Bible - mark it up: ask questions, note commands, look for indications of the character of God, pay close attention to passages that have special meaning to you and think of the Bible as a love letter from God to you.

The Old Testament Challenge - Part 3-1j: David - A Broken Heart

One of the Bible's more tragic stories is that of the relationship between David and his son, Absalom. We learn of the things that David didn't do to avoid the conflict with his son. If David had confronted, listened and spoke to his all his offspring involved in this sordid story, a lot of the family heartbreak would not have taken place. We too, need to confront, listen and speak in love if relational heartbreak takes place in our own homes. Love must act in ways other than just tenderness if we are to receive love. In the end, David had to learn this the hard way. It may not have to come to that for us if we take action now in our difficult relationships.

The Old Testament Challenge - Part 3-1i: David - A Compassionate Heart

2 Samuel 9 demonstrates a side of David we don't always see--his compassionate side. There are three aspects of David's compassion toward Jonathan's crippled son Mephibosheth that we can emulate. David shows us that compassion is personal. Compassion allows us to move toward the one to whom we feel strongly. Most importantly, compassion flows out of a love relationship, the same type of love relationship Jesus wants to have with us. In fact, Jesus has so much compassion for us that He died for us.

The Old Testament Challenge - Part 3-1e: David - A Passionate Heart

At one point in David's life it is recorded that he danced, worshiping the Lord with wild abandon. Should we worship like David? A better question is how can we worship with passion? Sometimes the way we worship reflects our heart toward God. Sometimes we worship as an escape; we lose our focus. Other times, we have our own preoccupations and don't have our hearts fully on the Lord. We can decide to go through the motions, or we can involve our hearts in worship like David. It may be risky, we may lose face with other people, but it is our attitude toward God that counts. Worship, whether in church or on our own, is our chance to engage with God.

The Old Testament Challenge - Part 3-1d: David - A Heart for Friendship

One of the greatest examples in the Bible of a spiritual friendship is the union between David and Saul's son, Jonathan. Their friendship shows us there is no wonder like the wonder of two souls knit together in God's covenant. We too, can have friendships like theirs. These friendships exist in three phases. First, we must search for our spiritual friend. Second, we don’t rush into a spiritual friendship; we have to "test the water." The third phase of spiritual friendship (like David and Jonathan's) is marked by the biblical phrase of "covenant." We may not have a lot of spiritual friendships, and they may not always last a lifetime, but God marks us when we develop them.

The Old Testament Challenge - Part 2-6: Saul, Where Is Your Confidence?

Saul is Israel’s first king and his reign is a frightening foretaste of what’s to come as Israel transitions to a monarchy. Here is a man who, from a human point of view, has everything going for him. He is a natural born leader: tall, handsome, well-liked, and an able soldier. Yet his life story is a tragedy of Shakespearian proportions. Not only does he consistently disobey God, but he rationalizes and even spiritualizes his failures. He becomes consumed with jealousy and rage, and lives much of his life under the judgment and rejection of God. In His grace, God offers multiple opportunities for Saul to repent and restore his relationship with Him. But Saul charted a course for his life that eventually led to his destruction. In the end, he died by his own hand - a sober warning to us all.

The Old Testament Challenge - Part 2-5: Samuel - Learning to Listen to God

We learn from Samuel and those around him some very important lessons about God’s desire for honesty, obedience and faith in our relationship with Him.
From Samuel’s mother, Hannah, we learn to be fully present with God when we pray - not holding back any of our pain, desires and thankfulness.
From Samuel’s mentor, Eli, we learn the importance of helping others hear God’s voice. We also learn the devastating consequences of ignoring our children’s destructive actions.
From Samuel himself we learn to listen to God and respond in obedience.
From Eli’s sons, Hophni and Phinehas, we learn that God will not be leveraged to meet our needs or desires.
From Samuel’s nation, Israel, we learn that people lacking trust in God’s provision will prefer to build a kingdom of their own.

The Old Testament Challenge - Part 2-4: Intercepting Spiritual Entropy

The cycles of disobedience and deliverance begun in the early chapters of Judges continue in the latter half of this book. Even God’s appointed leaders aren’t exempt from personal and political corruption. One judge, Jephthah, foolishly vows to sacrifice his daughter in direct contradiction of God’s commandments against human sacrifice. The fledgling nation is split by civil strife between clans (foreshadowing the all-out civil war during the time of the kings). Even a promising young judge like Samson, full of physical vigor and spiritual potential gets caught in a series of compromises. He forfeits not only his honor, dignity, and position, but eventually his very life, dying in blind ignominy among his pagan captors.

Yet in these dark times glow small embers of God’s light. Ruth, a Moabite widow finds grace in the midst of God’s people. She comes to Israel in poverty with her mother-in-law Naomi, yet the kindness of Boaz leads first to provision and eventually to marriage. One of God’s great kings, King David, is her great-grandson. And her greatest heir, Messiah Jesus himself, comes from her line - showing once again that God’s grace is not limited to ethnicity or gender, but is freely offered to the world. This period teaches us His kindness and purposes prevail even when God’s people are disobediently doing what is right in their own eyes.

<itunes:subtitle>The Old Testament Challenge - Part 2-3: Identifying Spiritual Entropy</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>The Book of Judges marks the fulfillment of two major promises God made to Abraham. After centuries of slavery, decades of wandering in wilderness, and years of bloody conquest, Israel is a nation of people with a land of their own. Yet, their refusal to eliminate all sources of temptation from their midst, in the form of other gods and their followers, leads to a bitter and ongoing cycle of sin, pain, and crying out. God delivers his people from their pain by raising up twelve judges who lead the nation into another season of peace and complacency. Each judge is unique:
Othniel delivers Israel with power and leads to 40 years of peace.
Ehud is a man with a disability who led Israel to 80 years of peace through assassination.
Deborah is the only judge to also be a prophet. She commands great respect from even the most powerful of men and leads Israel into 40 years of peace.
Gideon is a very fearful and self-doubting man. Gideon’s leadership makes it obvious that God, and not man, is their deliverer. Israel enjoys another 40 years of peace.

We learn from the Israelites that there is a world of difference between crying out in pain and authentic repentance. Like Israel, we too can find ourselves in cycles of sin. With Jesus as our ultimate deliverer, we have the ready promise of freedom from this cycle of sin if we seek repentance.

As we gather to worship, ask yourself, are you here to escape the pain caused in life from the cycle of sin, or are you here to live victoriously in Christ by surrendering your life fully to him?</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>From the beginning to the end of our lives, we hunger for community. It’s not just how we were created, it’s why! God, who enjoys relationship within his being as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, designed us to reflect his nature through loving and life-giving relationship with him and with each other. Only by participating in God’s plan for community can the longing of our hearts be satisfied. As part of the Old Testament Challenge, we will study the OT and you will discover God’s passionate desire for intimacy with his people and among his people. Together we will unlock the historical, cultural, and geographical background meanings of Bible passages. Be transported thousands of years into the past so you can see, hear, smell, taste, and touch the ancient world as it comes alive like never before.</itunes:summary>
